Based on the Spanish folk dance as it appears in in a set of guitar variations by Italian composer Francesco Corbetta, Marais' Variations followed the model of Arcangelo Corelli's set of Variations on the same theme for.

8. This set of 25 variations is an anonymous 18th-century arrangement for solo flute of “Les Folies d'Espagne”, originally published in by the famous French viol player Marin Marais.
